CAR SPECIFICATIONS The primary guiding factor for these rules is safety. The specifications should not prevent any driver from building their own cart with or without minimal adult assistance. Although there are free cart building plans available to registered entrants, participants are encouraged to design their own carts with the following specifications: MATERIALS Carts are to be built primarily out of wood. Axles, steering shafts, cables, roll bars and the associated hardware can be metal but the chassis frame and axle trees and body must be made of wood. No fiberglass, plastic or metal bodies. FLOOR BOARD/CHASSIS Must be a minimum of ¾" plywood. No particle board or chip board. BODY The driver must be enclosed by the body of the cart with only the head and upper body exposed. The nose of the cart must be able to support the weight of the vehicle at a 45° angle (the starting blocks hold the cart in this position on the ramps prior to each race). No sharp, protruding body parts allowed. Any sharp edges in the cockpit must be padded or covered. ROLLBARS All carts require a rollbar. They may be constructed of either metal pipe or plywood, same as the floor that is incorporated into the design of the body. The rollbar, regardless of material, must be able to support the weight of the vehicle and the driver, while upside down and resting on the bar and either end of the cart. It must also be above the seated, helmeted driver's head. PROPULSION All carts are to be propelled by gravity alone. SEAT BELTS Seat belts, bolted to the floor, are mandatory. Lap belts at minimum, but shoulder belts are recommended. SEATS Drivers must be seated above the floorboard such that their position and or movements do not interfere with the operation of the braking or steering systems. Padding is recommended. STEERING SYSTEMS Steering is to be achieved by a cable and pulley or like system. No "rope and feet" steering is allowed. Cables attached to the axle by turnbuckles (for adjustment) must use a safety wire through said turnbuckle. BRAKING SYSTEMS No caliper or hand controlled brakes. All braking systems must be symmetrical, affecting both sides of the cart equally. Brakes should operate by either one or both feet. No Fred Flintstone's brakes. Ground contact for braking should be made via an automobile tire tread or like material. Brakes must be capable of stopping the cart while it is in motion. DIMENSIONS Maximum length 84" Minimum length 60"
No "Z glass" or similar American soapbox derby wheels solid. Solid hubbed wheels recommended. No inflatable tires. Carts must have four (4) wheels, all of which must be in contact with the ground. MISC. Each cart must have two eye bolts mounted, one through the floorboard within 3" of the front of the vehicle (not interfering with steering) and one within 3" of, or on the rear, both capable of holding the combined weight of vehicle and driver, when pulled on an incline. All major components (steering, braking, seat belts, rollbar and suspension) must be mounted securely, with through bolts, nuts and washers. All steering and braking cables must remain snug throughout full range of motion. All steering and braking cables must be terminated with double crimps or double clamps. No open pulleys (where cable may come off pulley wheel) are to be used. All turnbuckles used must be wired or otherwise prevent from turning due to vibration. No kit cars (ex. Way-cool Kits) Carts should be primarily built by their drivers with parental assistance only. |
